What is a Newborn Session?

What is a Newborn Session?

How does it work? When do I need to book? Would you be able to help if my baby is already here? What do I need to do?

These are some of the questions I most frequently receive from clients and I thought it would be a good idea to do an FAQ to answer just a few.

1.What age should my newborn be?

A Newborn session should take place when baby is between 5 and 21 days old. This is because they are very sleepy still. They also curl up easily at that age.  It is easier to pose them effectively and safely.

2. Does it mean that I can’t have a newborn session if my baby is older than 21 days?

No, absolutely not! You can still have a newborn session after 21 days but your baby might not be sleeping as much or even might refuse certain poses! There is also a possibility that they won’t like being naked!  It really depends on each baby!

This is why I now also offer Short & Sweet Newborns for babies between 4 and 10 weeks. These sessions are much shorter as baby is mostly wrapped. We also do a set number of poses. You can find more information about this here: https://www.sandracullenphotography.com/short-and-sweet-newborn/

3. When do I need to book?

Ideally, you should book your newborn session once you’ve had your 20 week scan. I will add your due date to my diary and you will be guaranteed a place. I only take a certain amount of newborn bookings every month so the earlier you book the better!  However, I do understand that sometimes life gets in the way and I will always try to fit you in my diary even if you book close to your due date.

4. What if my baby is already here?

If your baby is already here, you will need to contact me as soon as possible. The window of opportunity is so short that I wouldn’t want you to miss it. If I have availability, I will always try to book you in for your session as quickly as possible.

5. How long does a Newborn session last?

Sessions usually last between 3 and 4 hours. This is because I work with baby and follow his schedule! If he needs a break or a feed, we stop and take our time. The whole session is very relaxed so that your baby is comfortable and stress-free.

6. What should my baby wear?

Nothing! I always start with baby being naked as it really captures how tiny they are! I provide a lot of props for my sessions and will work with you to accommodate your favorite colours. I’m also very happy to try and integrate something that is important to you like a keepsake or baby’s favourite cuddly toy.

7. Do I need to prepare anything?

I will ask you to prepare baby for me before you arrive. Once you have booked your session, you will receive a Preparation Guide and I’m always happy to talk to you on the phone or by email to answer any questions.

8. Will my baby be comfortable?

Of course! The room will be warm so your baby will be all nice and relaxed. I also use white noise which helps keep them calm. And I never force a baby into a pose. If baby says no, I move on to the next!

9. Is Newborn Photography safe?

Be assured that safety is my number one priority when it comes to your baby. I am highly trained in what I do and will never risk your baby’s safety for a picture.

10. What happens if my baby pees or poos when he’s not wearing his nappy?

Don’t be embarrassed! It comes with the job and to be honest, it happens most times! If it happens on a blanket or a prop, I will change it and put it on the side to be washed later. If baby pees or poos on me, I just carry on! I’ve become immune to it and don’t even blink nowadays!

I hope you have found this FAQ useful. If you would like to book a Newborn Session, contact me HERE . I’d love to help you 🙂
